Terms of use
Last updated 23 October 2026
These terms apply when you use Night Sky. By using the site you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use it.
Who we are
Night Sky is run by Adam Pritchard (“we”, “us”). You can contact us at adamrprit@proton.me. How we handle information is explained in our privacy policy.
Using Night Sky
Night Sky is free, for personal and non-commercial use. You're welcome to use it to plan observing, to learn about the sky and to share screenshots. Please don't:
- copy, scrape or republish the site or its data in bulk;
- send automated or unusually heavy traffic. The site relies on free services with fair-use limits, and heavy use can get it blocked for everyone;
- try to break, overload or get unauthorised access to the site or the systems behind it;
- use the site for anything unlawful.
Predictions, not guarantees
Night Sky estimates what you can see using astronomical calculations, models and forecasts. Weather forecasts can be wrong, the clouds drawn on the map are illustrative, light pollution figures are estimates from satellite data, satellite positions drift as their orbits change, and what you actually see depends on your eyesight, your surroundings and local lights. Please use it as a guide, and not for navigation or anything where safety depends on it.
Stay safe
- Never look at the Sun directly, and never through binoculars, a telescope or a camera without a proper solar filter. It can permanently damage your eyes in seconds.
- Take care when observing at night: check the weather, respect private land and road safety, dress for the cold and let someone know where you're going.
Other people's content
Night Sky uses data and content from others, including map data from OpenStreetMap contributors, descriptions from Wikipedia, pictures from Wikimedia Commons and weather from Open-Meteo. These remain theirs and are used under their own licences, listed on our Credits page. Links to other sites are for convenience. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for them.
Our content
The site's design, code and original text belong to us or our licensors. Data and content from others belong to them, as described on the Credits page.
Changes and availability
We may change, pause or withdraw the site, or any part of it, at any time. We may also update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and the version on this page applies from then on.
Our responsibility to you
- Night Sky is provided free and “as is”, for private use.
- We aren't responsible for any loss or damage that arises from using the site, except where the law doesn't allow us to exclude it. In particular, we aren't responsible for business losses such as lost profit or business interruption.
- Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that can't be excluded or limited under the law of England and Wales.
- Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Any dispute will be dealt with by the courts of England and Wales, except that if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.
